Abstract
This study aims to select some bacteria capable to remove nitrate through denitrification process for
being used in recirculated aquaculture system. It began with enrichment step for natural mixed cultures in artificial
aquaculture wastewater. The primary screening step was conducted by using modified artificial seawater agar and
Trypticase soy agar supplemented with nitrate. The secondary screening step was conducted in Nitrate broth tube
which contained Durham tube for gas collection. It was found that only 4 isolate showed high nitrate removal rate
(S12, S21, T12 and T31). Only isolate S21 showed highest removal rate (53%) for nitrate both in nitrate broth and
real coastal aquaculture wastewater (white snapper aquaculture). This isolate was identified as
Pseudomonas
sp.
