Unfortunately, Synthesis, structure and properties of the complexes have not been many reports. Objective : To the synthesis and study both physical and chemical properties of the copper complex with tartaric acid ligand. Methods : The synthesized product from copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate and tartaric acid in the mole ratio of 1:2 at room temperature for 6 h. The solution was then filtered and air dried, until obtaining the blue crystals. Results : Single crystal X-ray diffraction results confirmed the monoclinic with P21 space groups. The parame- ters are: a = 8.3728 (4) Å, b = 8.7629 (4) Å, c = 12.1529(6) Å, α = γ =90° and β = 104.539°. The molecular mass is 527.31 g/mol. The molecular formula is Cu 2 C 8 H 16 O 18 The complex is binuclear which consists of 4 free water molecules and the main molecule of [Cu 2 (C 4 H 4 O 6 ) 2 (H 2 O) 2 ] acting as a monomer that generates a polymer com- plex formulated as [Cu 2 (C 4 H 4 O 6 ) 2 (H 2 O) 2 ] n ·4H 2 O. This complex is also the metal-organic framework. Fourier trans- form infrared spectra confirmed the functional groups, such as the stretching frequencies of O-H, C sp2 -H and COO- at 3417 cm-1, 2851 cm-1 and 1625 cm-1 respectively. The ultraviolet visible spectra confirmed π→π* of ligands at 280 nm and d-d transition of copper (II) ion at 603 nm. Conclusion : The as-obtained complex can be easily synthesized and inexpensive. The physical property of this complex is blue crystal color. The study of chemical properties confirms that the binuclear complex can be connected together to become a polymeric complex. It also is metal- organic molecule that can be used to study magnetism and antimicrobial activity for industrial purposes.
