Integrating Spiritual, Ethical, and Quality Perspectives in Animal Handling and Slaughtering Muhammad Nizam Hayat* ¹ ¹ Department of Animal Science, Faculty of Agriculture, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Malaysia *Corresponding author’s email: nizamhayat@upm.edu.my 3 Abstract Pre-slaughter animal handling and slaughtering are critical processes that not only influences the welfare of animals but also a major determinant of the quality, safety, and acceptability of meat products. Beyond physical and technological considerations, spiritual (halallan & toyyibban) and ethical (animal welfare) aspects play an essential role in shaping sustainable livestock production and consumer trust. This lecture highlights the integration of Islamic principles of ihsan (compassionate conduct) with ethical handling practices to ensure both animal welfare and meat quality are in accordance with halal standards. Emphasis is placed on the interconnectedness between pre-slaughter handling, stress reduction, and the biochemical changes that affect meat quality attributes such as tenderness, juiciness, and shelf life. By bridging spiritual obligations, ethical responsibilities, and scientific understanding, this approach fosters a holistic framework for sustainable animal agriculture. Ultimately, integrating these perspectives not only safeguards animal welfare but also enhances consumer confidence, minimizes economic loss, supports market competitiveness, and contributes to the broader goals of sustainable food systems.
