Abstract
The purpose of this research is to study a permanent viscosity reduction process of some vegetable and
animal oils which were processed with the gamma ray from Cobolt-60. In this study, we particularly emphasize
the following five main factors. The first is various types of oils which are Palm Oil, Coconut Oil and Yard Oil.
The second is the solvent (Ethyl Alcohol and Diesel). Third, ratios of the solution (oil sample: solvent) as 4:1 and
3:2 are taken into an account. The forth is a quantity of gamma ray of 30 and 50 kGy. Finally an additive for
adding and non-adding oxygen during radiation process is also a key factor. After radiating gamma ray, In case
that the solvent is not Diesel, it will extract the solvent from the initial substance by a simple fractional distillation
and examine a change of oil/solution viscosity before and after gamma ray radiation in according to ASTMD 445
standard. For measurement data, it can be found that radiating gamma ray will affect the permanent viscosity
reduction of oil/solution sample and a significance of the factors of an interest, which are oil, solvent, ratio of the
solution, additive and dose of gamma ray respectively, which influence a variation of viscosity for before-after
comparison. In summary, this study has benefits in the sense that it is to develop the new applied nuclear
technology and the circulated energy sources for supporting a more usage of domestic raw material in Thailand.
Since a decrease of the viscosity of oil/solvent samples after gamma ray radiating, for using Veggie / Kero Mix
Biodiesel can make more capability of mixing up vegetable/animal oil with Diesel or Kerosene and make the
viscosity property closer to Ethanol Biodiesel, there is plenty of room to conduct further research until achieving
to use some vegetable/animal oils after gamma ray radiation with appropriate factors to produce straight Oil
Biodiesel which can be used with a low RPM engine. Furthermore, this will be a way to increase a stability of the
domestic energy situation, add values to agricultural production which is used for raw materials, reduce pollution
and hence abate the Greenhouse effect.
