Abstract
The aim of this research was studied to inhibitory efficiency of essential oil from turmeric
(Curcuma
longa
Linn.) on bovine mastitis bacteria. The essential oil was extracted from turmeric rhizome by steam
distillation method. The amount of essential oil from turmeric rhizome was 1.2 % (v/w). The turmeric essential oil
used for inhibit on the growth of 4 strain mastitis bacteria,
Staphylococcus aureus
,
Streptococcus agalactiae
,
Klebseilla
sp. and
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
by disc diffusion method. The concentrate of essential oil at 1,000,
2,000, 3,000 and 4,000 ôg/ml was compared with positive control, tetracycline. The antibacterial activity of
essential oil from turmeric found the growth of
S. aureus
,
St. agalactiae
,
Klebseilla
sp.,
and
P. aeruginosa
were
inhibited by every concentration of essential oil from turmeric. The inhibition clear zone were 13.7-15.3, 11.8-
15.3, 12.6-16.9 and 14.2-15.4 mm., respectively. The inhibitory efficiency of essential oil from turmeric compared
with tetracycline were 167.0-186.5, 120.4-156.1, 51.8-69.5 and 142.0-154.0 %, respectively. This result shown
that the essential oil from turmeric could be use to resolve mastitis problem and replace the antibiotics.
