Introduction
Usually, The formulation of natural rubber and synthetic rubbers is an important requirement for an
antioxidant stabilizer. Attempts have been made to use oligomeric or polymeric antioxidants to achieve this
requirement because antioxidants can reduce the effects of blooming which can cause antioxidants to be easily
removed from the rubber by volatilization or leaching. For example, rubber products such as rubber glove, rubber
thread and wheel.
The intention of this work was to synthesize 2,6-di-
tert
-butyl-4-vilnylphenol (2,6-DBVP) antioxidant for
grafting onto natural rubber. The characterization of 2,6-DBVP obtained was also investigated.
Material & methods
Material
Ammonium acetate, formaldehyde, Triphenylphosphine and Potassium-
tert
-butylate were obtained from
MERCK. 2,6-di-
tert
-butylphenol and methyl iodide were obtained from ACROS ORGANICS. Acetic acid was
obtained from J.T Baker. Tetrahydrofuran (THF) was obtained from LAB-SCAN. Diethyl ether was obtained from
QRëC
TM
. Hexane was obtained from UNILAB.
Methods
1.
Preparation of 3,5-di-
tert
-butyl-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde by formylation of 2,6-di-
tert
-butylphenol.
A 500 ml reaction flask fitted with a mechanical stirrer, heating mantle, thermometer and water-cooled
condenser was charged with 200 ml of glacial acetic acid, and 61.7 g (0.8 mole) of ammonium acetate. To the stirred
mixture there were slowly added 97 g of 37% formalin (1.2 mole of formaldehyde) and 20.6 g (0.1 mole) of 2,6-di-
tert
-butylphenol. The mixture was refluxed (107-109°C) for 6 hours. After cooling to ambient temperature, the
