Abstract
The study on morphological and anatomical characters of
Zanthoxylum nitidum
(Roxb.) DC.
reveals that this plant is a woody vine, dioecious, and armed with thorns. Its leaves are imparipinnate,
alternate, elliptic to ovate ; blades are chartaceous and dotted with oil glands. The inflorescences are axillary
panicle. The flowers are small, yellowish green to red. The fruit is an aggregate of 1-4 follicles , containing 1
seed. The seeds are subglobose. The root and stem consist of both primary and secondary tissues. The
stoma
is the typical type which is found only in the lower epidermis of the leaves. The mesophyll consists of a
layer of palisade and 4-5 layers of spongy. The vascular bundles are randomly distributed between the
mesophyll and the spongy. In the main vein, vascular bundle is almost surrounded by fiber; at upper and
lower side of the vascular bundle many layers of collenchyma are located. The mesocarp of the fruit is
composed primarily of parenchyma where the oil glands are commonly found; the endocarp is composed of
3-4 layers of fiber. The seeds are albuminous. The local people in Pattani and Satun Province have used the
roots and leaves of this plant for the treatment of wounds and hemorrhoids. The young leaves are eaten raw as a
vegetable, with the side benefit of a laxative.
