Abstract
The aim of this study was to study the prevalence of low back pain, the impact of low back pain on daily
activities and the risk factors related to low back pain of supporting personnel at Walailak University, Nakhon Si
Thammarat province. The sampled supporting personnel received a questionnaire including general demographic
data, lifestyle, characteristics of work and details of low back pain and its impact on the daily activities. The data
were then analyzed. The result showed the total number of supporting personnel who completed the questionnaire
was 202; 150 females and 52 males. Mean age was 35.48

5.86 years. Those experiencing low back pain in the
last year (annual prevalence) were 157 (77.70%) while those with pain at the time of the study (point prevalence)
were 122 (60.39%). Mean pain level in low back pain supporting personnel group was evaluated to the Visual
Analog Scale (VAS); 4.33

2.14. Severity was graded according to the Fairbank Disability scores from the
modified Oswestry low back pain disability; 1 (0.8%) severe, 16 (13.1%) moderate and 105 (86.1%) mild
disability. The greatest impact of low back pain on the daily activities was sitting (23.8%), lifting (20.4%) and
homemaking (14.8%) respectively. Risk factors associated with low back pain were body weight (p = 0.022) and
biomechanical factors at work. Specific tasks significantly associated with low back pain were graded from the
greatest to the least in the following order; twisting the trunk, lifting heavy objects with two hands, bending
towards or leaning backwards, standing for a long period and carrying loads with one hand (p < 0.05). This study
concluded that although the prevalence of low back pain of supporting personnel at Walailak University was high,
the disability was mostly mild. The greatest impact of low back pain on daily activities was sitting, lifting and
homemaker respectively. The risk factors significantly related to low back pain were body weight and
biomechanical factors.
