Abstract
In this research we demonstrate two types of spectrometer using a mobile phone as a
detector. The first type is grating spectrometer utilizing optical interference principle creating spectrum
of the light source whereas the second type is prism spectrometer using refraction of light through the
prism. Calibrations were carried out with mercury lamp demonstrating the linear relation between
wavelength of the spectrum and pixel position. As a result, the resolution of grating spectrometer is
1.24 nm/pixel, which is two times higher than that of prism spectrometer. The average error values of
the experimental results measuring the spectra of hydrogen and helium by grating spectrometer and
prism spectrometer are 5.94% and 6.32% respectively.
