Abstract
Burkholderia pseudomalle
is a Gram-negative bacillus, the causative agent of Melioidosis which is an
important infectious disease in the Southeast Asia and Northern Australia. The organism lives as a saprophyte in
the endemic areas. People get infected through skin abrasion that contaminated soil or water or sometime by
inhalation. Therefore, information concerning factors that related to the present of organism in soil may help us to
prevent and control the disease. This study investigated some physicochemical properties of soil including
temperature, pH, percentage of moisture content (% MC) and grain size analysis together with the presence of
B.
pseudomallei
in soil sample. Thirty soil samples were collected within Prince of Songkla University, Pattani
campus. The average value of each soil factor are temperature = 28.4 ºC, pH = 6.97 and % MC = 28.27%. From
grain size analysis, soil types in this study are mostly sandy silt. From isolation and identification of bacteria, we
can obtain
Burkholderia
spp. from 13 soil samples of which is 43.3% of total soil samples. These area are farm
land, Demonstration school of Prince of Songkla University (primary), Science and Technology building, 200 year
olds canal and sports stadium. For soil samples that
B. pseudomallei
can be isolated are farm land, Demonstration
school of Prince of Songkla University (primary), Science and Technology building and 200 year olds canal.
There is up to 50% of collection site found in 200 year olds canal.
The ratio of
B. pseudomallei
to
B. thailandensis
detection in soil in the areas is about 1:2.17. Moreover,
there are six sites that
B. pseudomallei
and
B. thailandensis
can be detected together. The information related to
this pathogen in soil may help us to control the disease in the near future.
