This is a study and distribution mapping of Melaleuca forests around Songkhla Lake and it peripheries,
with emphasis on both
Melaleuca cajuputi
Powell and
Syzygium gratum (Wight) S.N. Mitra var.gratum
species.
The study utilized aerial photographs in combination with field data collected by using a GPS (Global Positioning
System) gadget. The researcher has mapped the distribution areas of Melaleuca around Songkhla Lake and its
peripheries by digitizing the boundaries of Songkhla Lake and charted out the buffer zones of the peripheries 3
kilometers inland from the shorelines. For interpretation, the information was incorporated with aerial
photographs taken in 2006 and2007, a topographical map of the 1:250,000 ratio, series 1501 S, 47-3 position and a
topographical map of the 1:50,000 ratio, series L7017 produced the Department of Military Maps, and a land
utilization map for Songkhla Lake and its peripheries (200-2007). Both the maps and the information from the
field form a drafted distribution map of Melaeuca in the area under study. The drafted map was verified with data
from the field and improvement made.
The Melaeuca forests cover 37,000 rais of land area, where 21,900 rais (59%) of the forests are in
Phatthalung Province and 15,000 rais (41%) are in Songkhla Province. In Phatthalung, Melaeuca forests are
found to cover 9,000 rais in Tambon Koh Nangkham, Pak Phayoon District and another 4,585 rais in Tambon
Phanangtoong, Khuan Khanoon District. In Songkhla, Melaeuca forests are found mostly in Tambon Khuan So,
Khuan Niang District and another 2,933 rais in Tambon Huan Luek, also in Khuan Niang District.
The findings of the study can be used as a guideline for the study on other aspects of Melaeuca forests,
including the planning and management of tourisms, water birds, public utilization and conservation of Melaeuca
forests.
