Abstract
In this research, a bagasse paper coating was prepared from a solution of biodegradable polymer,
polylactide (PLA), containing organoclay at 0-6% weight.The coating was applied on the paper using a rod coater,
and the coated paper was
subsequently dried at 80
o
C for 20 min. The coated papers were characterized in terms of
coating weight, morphology, smoothness, brightness, water absorption, and water contact angle.The results
showed that the porosity on the paper surface was substantially reduced since the coating prepared was able to
effectively fill up and cover the paper surface. Water absorption of the coated paper was significantly decreased as
well. From the contact angle measurement, the surface of coated paper appeared to be hydrophobic since the water
contact angle reached about 100 degree. Smoothness of the coated paper was similar to the uncoated one, whereas
brightness of the paper after coating was slightly decreased.
