Abstract
This study aimed to explore the socio-economic characteristics of households and to investigate the
factors relating to the household indebtedness. The data were collected from 400 head of households in Sadao
municipalities, using stratified simple sampling with table of random number. The findings can be summarized as
follows. Over a half of samples were indebted, 40-49 years old, Post-Secondary graduates and farmers. The
proportion of expenditure per income was 59.20 percent. Most of their loan was formal debt. The majority of their
debt was purchased for vehicles and house. The informal debt was sourced from their relatives. Ratio of debt to
income was 6.61 time. It was evidence at 0.05 significant level that the factors correlating to household debt were
age, religion, educational level, marital status, household head’s occupation, number of household members,
number of children in school, household average income, household average expenditure, household asset value,
source of loans, formal and informal interest rate.
