Abstract
This research plan aimed to analyze production and marketing potential of traditional seafood
processing industry, and to evaluate the roles of private and government agencies in promotion
of potential development of traditional seafood processing industry around Songkhla lake basin.
The data were collected from 296 producers, 400 consumers and 70 middle men via the stratified
random sampling method. Percentage, arithmetic mean, standard derivation, chi-square, t-test and
F-test were employed to analyze the raw data and to test the hypotheses. The main findings are as
follows. Regarding the production potential, it was evident that Singhanakorn district and Muang
district, Songkla Province were the most potential production areas, while dried fish, dried squeeze,
dried-sweet shrimp, shrimp paste and dried shrimp, respectively were the high potential products
of this industry. It was found that the products with high marketing potential were shrimp paste,
salted fish, dried fish, dried shrimp and dried-sweet shrimp. Finally it was found that the roles of
private and government agencies in promotion of potential development of the seafood processing
industry stated at low level and was criticized as not suitable for the characteristics of the producers.
