Abstract
The objective of this research was to study the Leung Yai Chaiya (Chaiya Big yellow) fighting cock
breed of Suratthani its development history and it phenotypic characteristics. It is a qualitative study, involving
interview, focus group and forum as research tools. The informants include cockowness, cock keepers and
trainers, cock fighting arena owners, cock fighting audience and gamblers and experts in fighting cocks. The
context of cock fighting community was studied prior to field data collection. The findings were that this
particular breed of cocks has been developed since many centuries ago. It has been very strictly selected and bred
by cock breeding expert in the area using local wisdom and experience accumulated and developed since the
Srivichaya time. It has become the most popular breed in southern Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and the
Philippines.
The appearance and phenotypic characteristics of the Leung Yai Chaiya male are being tall and upright.
It has a large thighs, narrow shoulder, narrow and long back and deep breast. It has a pea type comb and red face.
The most characteristics of eyes, beak, shank, scale, toe nails and spur are yellow. It body plumage is black with
white spots. It skin is soft yellow. Sickle feathers are black with some white especially on the top part. The breed
moves skillfully fast, possesses many different fighting tactics, does not allow itself to become still target, high
tolerance, can employ both spurs and shanks very well. However, it has some weak points, such as the rather thick
body, thick feathers and a little thin skin.
