Abstract
A study was conducted to evaluate dry matter intake (DMI), apparent nutrient digestibility and feeding values of
chopped oil palm fronds (OPF) (1 to 2 cm length) improved feeding quality by urea treatment or microbial inoculation in goats. A
completely randomized block design with 4 blocks was used. Treatments were 3 levels of urea treatment [0 (control), 2 and 4%
w/w] and microbial inoculation. The results showed that, urea treatments and microbial inoculation did not significantly (p>0.05)
improve dry matter intake when compared with control. Overall average DMI of goats was 51.88 g/kg metabolic body weight.
Both 2 and 4% of urea treatments significantly improved (p<0.05) crude protein, neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber
digestibility of diet, comparing with control and microbial inoculation. In conclusion, urea treatment, both 2 and 4%, did not
improve DMI of diet. However, goats may obtain more nutrients, especially crude protein and fiber, due to higher digestibility of
those nutrients.
