Abstract
This study investigated diversity and abundance of macrobenthic invertebrates in Thale Noi,
Phatthalung Province in wet season of 2014 and dry season of 2015 using 529 cm
2
Ekman grab from 8
stations of inshore and offshore area. There were 3 Phyla of benthos found which were classified into
27 families, including 15 families of Arthropoda, 6 families of Annelida, and 6 families of Mollusca. The
average density was 251.97 individuals per m
2
. Offshore area found more families and abundance of
benthos than inshore area. The abundance was found to depend on seasonal change. Phylum
Arthropoda was the main component of their community (95%) while insect larvae of the family
Ceratopogonidae was the most frequently found benthos (50%). The average richness, evenness and
diversity index were
± 13, 4±
Ēúą
± 14, respectively. The overall water quality was
good, except some parameters showed significantly different between stations in inshore and offshore
area due to anthropogenic activities. However, the diversity index of macrobenthic invertebrates
indicated that the quality of water in this area was fair which aquatic animals can survive.
