Abstracts
General characteristics and raising practice of 172 southern indigenous male cattle in Amphoe
Papayom were studied. The most frequent characteristics found were brown-black body color (41.3
%), encircled horn (49.4 %), short face (62.8 %), wide bases of horn (67.4 %), small eyes (56.4 %),
small ears (74.4 %), large hump (49.4 %), small flank (66.9 %), narrow tail (74.4 %) and normal testist
(72.1 %). Average body weight, heart girth, body length and height at wither significantly (P < 0.05)
increased in the first 3 years of age. Later those values were not significantly different ( P > 0.05)
among age groups. Average body weight, hearth girth, body length and height at wither for cattle less
than 2 years and greater than 5 years were 187, 356, kg: 107, 131 cm; 134, 171 cm and 101, 119 cm,
respectively. Most farmers raised cattle for their supplementary income and practice tethering system
of raising. Herd health program include vaccination, deworming and using both modern and traditional
medicine. Bred selection and hand mating using fighting bull as a sire were frequently practices.
