understanding local viewpoints and needs – for example, understanding the overlapping
and dynamic self-identifying communities regardless of artificial boundaries and then
using this information to inform practical applied
research. Another example may be the modern developments of the famous art genre,
the Menorah Rongkruu and its adjustment to the needs and aspirations of modern
people with its commercializing while retaining its ability to mirror reflexive
transformation and social change in Southern Thailand today.

14. acknowledging the special nature of being a border region and seeking knowledge
from other similar dynamic situations around the globe – for example, defining the
permeability of the borders in cultural, economic, political and other ways, and
identifying defining characteristics as part of global research about border regions.
25. foreseeing common economic futures when borders become increasingly porous
under ASEAN policies and as has occurred elsewhere in the world with stability
– for example, engaging with regional fora for applied research necessary to inform
policy actions in support of projected changes in border management.
36. training a generation of researchers that are comfortable with the region, respectful
and knowledgeable of the resident cultures and of the languages of the region – for example,
including language as a tool of research activities that is to be appreciated by graduate
researchers, and maintaining an active linguistics research program focussed on regional
languages.
These are examples picked from a range of information about this region – others could
have been chosen to illustrate the central point that the region has its own specificity which
should define university-based research interests. A cursory amplification of some of these
examples will serve to emphasize this point.
