Abstract
The objective of this research was to study ways and factors leading to religious commitment
of Thai Muslims in three southern border provinces of Thailand : Pattani, Yala and Narathiwas. The
needed data was collected by means of the distribution of questionnaires to a sample of 896 Thai
Muslims in the three southern border provinces. The data then was analyzed by using frequency,
percentage, arithmetic means, standard deviation. The research is found that 1) The sources of religious
knowledge, advices, practices from which Thai Muslims learned are mainly gained from religious
teachers or ustadhs. Second to them are parents, brothers and sisters, imams of mosque, spouses, friends,
lecturers of Islamic studies and reliance on self study consecutively. 2) As a whole there are two
denominations of Thai Muslims in the areas in terms of their religious school of thought. The first
belongs to
Ahli al-Sunnah
school which literally adheres to apparent meanings of Quranic verses and
Prophetic sayings without any further interpretation. They are called
Salaf
. The second is called
Khalaf
which follows the way initiated by Abu Hasan al-Ash‘ariy in understanding and practicing religious faith
and principles. It sometimes allows interpretation of religious texts or simply follows instructions of
religious scholars in maintaining religious principles without support of textual evidences. 3) Thai
Muslims their religious practices in the areas maintained in more ways than their faith is. Some follow
Sunnah with or without full knowledge of textual evidences. Others cling to al-Shafi‘iy school of thought
blindly. There are also many Muslims who practiced their religion at random. They either ignore religious
evidences. 4) Most of the Muslim Thais in the southern border areas are still confused with Sunnah and
Bid‘ah (religious innovations). They can not fully distinguish between the two, resulting in their
committing mistakes or being confused while maintaining their religious faith and practices.
