Abstract
Thaksin University, Phattalung Campus is an important educational institute in Phattalung Province.
Undoubtedly, its importance is stressed on being a learning center for students and communities. The role of
community development, in particular, is obviously outstanding. With intellectual resources available, the
university is perceived as a crucial mechanism for supporting knowledge development and improving quality of
life of populations in the communities. The stated resources are, for example, qualified personnel, experts, and
specialist with academic knowledge in different fields. Besides, facilities and equipment for community services
are provided. However, lack of sufficient access to the communities is found. Academic service to the
communities does not, consequently, meet their needs. Therefore, the research is aimed at studying needs of
communities in Phatthalung province for academic service from Thaksin University. The surveyed academic
service is categorized into 7 aspects: general knowledge and careers; health, sanitation and nutrition; culture,
virtue and morality; natural resources’ conservation and development of ecological system; recreation; information
distribution; and the enhancement of national stability and local welfare. This study is useful for Thaksin
University to determine ways for academic service development in order to satisfy the needs of those communities.
Moreover, good relationships between the university and the communities are further created. 400 samples are
selected out of 492,884 populations from 11 districts in Phattalung province. The instrument used for data
collection is a Likert rating scale questionnaire with a reliability of 0.98. Concerning data analysis, percentage,
mean (X), and standard deviation (SD) are computed.
The overall results and the results of the 7 aspects of this study analyzed by comparing the communities’
needs for academic service reveal that all of the aspects are needed by populations in the 11 districts in Phattalung
province. The overall needs are rated at high levels and different aspects contain different academic service needs.
