Abstract
The purpose of this pilot studyǰwas to investigate the association between vitamin D receptor
(VDR) polymorphisms and the susceptibility to aggressive periodontitis (AP) in a Thai population. The
study population comprised 24 APǰpatients and 229 controls with no periodontitis.
Genomic DNA was
isolated from peripheral blood. Genotyping of VDR polymorphisms at 4
positions:
Fok
I,
Bsm
I,
Apa
I andǰ
Taq
I was analysed using real-time polymerase chain reaction. The results showed that the frequency
of CC+CT genotypes at
Fok
I position was lower in AP patients
than in controls (73.4 %). In
contrast, the frequency of the GG genotype at
Bsm
I position was higher in AP patients (95.8% than in
controls (80.3%).
However, the differences between groups did not reach statistical significance. Within
the limitation of this pilot study, the results indicate that all four VDR polymorphisms were not
associated with susceptibility to AP in our study population.
