Abstract
The aim of this study was to produce valuable biomaterial by using agricultural waste. The production of
pectin from Chinese cabbage waste as well as the application of isolated pectin was studied. The effect of
moisture, temperature, pH, acid types and concentrations, sodium hexa-metaphosphate concentrations and
extraction time was investigated by optimization method. The optimal extraction condition shown that fresh
cabbages incubated with 1 M acetic acid (pH 3.0) at 100
O
C for 90 min in combined with 1 M sodium hexa-
metaphosphate 8% (w/v). The highest amount of pectin (3.46±0.002 g%) was obtained under optimal condition.
The characteristic of isolated pectin were similar to commercial pectin specified by The Joint/WHO Expert
Committee on Food Additive (JECFA). The isolated pectin was applied for biodegradable film by mixed with
starch and glycerol. Biodegradable film had 9 N of elongation resistant, 0.6 mm of thickness as well as the best
characteristics in water transmission and water solubility index. This film found to be suitable and have a possible
potential for medical and industrial application.
