Abstract
The aim of this study were to determine about growth; in terms of percentage weight gain (PWG),
specific growth rate (SGR) and daily weight gain (DWG) of the giant freshwater prawn (
Macrobrachium
rosenbergii
) fed the diet that carbohydrate and binder were replaced by red algae (
Gracilaria fisheri)
. Food
conversion ratio (FCR) survival rate (%) and proximate composition were also compared between the prawns. The
experimental period was 8 weeks. The trial were 5 treatments (with 3 replications each) classified by the
percentage of
Gracilaria
added; T1 was the control (no
Gracilaria
added), T2, T3, T4 and T5 were the diet that 5,
10, 15 and 20 percent of
Gracilaria
were added respectively. The initial weight of the giant freshwater prawn was
about 0.37-0.44 g and at the end of the experiment the prawn from T1 and T2 had average weight at 2.40 g and
2.81 g respectively. These were higher than the prawn from T4 and T5 trials which had the weight between 1.66
and 2.15 g (p < 0.05). However, the average weight of the prawn from T3 trial was 2.15 g and no differences were
found if compared with the control diet and with T4 and T5 trial (P > 0.05). There were no significant differences
between the SGR of the prawn from T1 T2 and T3 (3.04 – 3.30 % day
-1
) and between T4 and T5 which had 2.34 –
2.71 % day
-1
SGR. The prawns fed the control and 5%
Gracilaria
diets had the daily weight gain for 35.04 and
42.21 mg day
-1
respectively and no significant difference between them. However, these were higher than the
prawn from T4 and T5 trials which had DWG at 23.82 and 21.68 mg day
-1
respectively. There were 3.46-6.47
FCR of all treatments and no differences were found among treatments. This phenomenon was also occurred for
survival rate, and 50 to 76 % survival rates were found in all trials (P > 0.05). According to proximate analysis of
fresh prawn at the end of the experiment, it was found that carbohydrate of the prawn of all treatments were not
significant difference. Protein of T1, T2, T3 and T4 were also not significantly difference. However, the lipid
concentration of the prawn without the additional of
Gracilaria
was highest. In conclusions, 0-10 % of red algae
(
Gracilaria fisheri
) can replace carbohydrate and binder in the diet for giant freshwater prawn (
Macrobrachium
rosenbergii
) without any impact on growth, survival, carbohydrate and protein of the prawn. However, the
replacement of carbohydrate and binder by
Gracilaria
had negative consequence on the lipid concentration of the
prawn.
