Abstract
The Study Project of Popular Wisdoms in Phattalung Province: the Study, Research, and Restoration of
Agricultural Wisdoms in Panangtung Community located at Moo 5, Tha Chang Village, Phanangtung Sub-district,
Kuan Kanun District, Phattalung Province, was done by various data collections. Primitive data of the community
was studied and field work was systematically operated by the research methods of in-depth interview, and focus
group discussion. Then, the data gathered was developed to be reached for a conclusion of the action research
problems. With respect to this, it was important to state that the community took part in seeking for the patterns of
rice culture restoration and experimental plots for organic rice fields. The result of the study project revealed that
popular wisdoms concerning agriculture of rice farming could be categorized into three groups:1) wisdoms with
regard to selection and factors of production in which the wisdoms of land selection corresponding to soil
structures, rice types, and seasons were included, 2) wisdoms, beliefs, customs, and rites concordant with rice
farming, and 3) wisdoms involving rice consumption and rice utilization with appropriation in each period of
growth. Apart from these, it was also found that the process of participatory action research in which the
community took part of seeking for restoration of rice farming wisdoms was to be classified into two practical
characteristics: individual and community cooperation. In connection with the former; apology to guardian spirits
of rice fields at the beginning of rice plough, rice seedlings’ transplantation, paddy sprouts’ transplantation in the
fields, and rice harvest was made. Concerning the community cooperation, such related activities as stir of Yaku
or Yakoe (young rice milk), pounding Khao Mao (rice flakes), and performing ritual of rice spirits (ceremony for
encouragement for rice) were collaboratively done. Furthermore; with the cooperation, the research problems were
developed for demonstration plots of organic rice fields. These provided the community with good options for
solving environmental problems, reducing production costs, and restoring rice farming wisdoms appropriately to
and concordantly with the community’s areas.
