Abstract
Now a day, porous particles have been used in variety of applications including industrial
process, engineering, and medication. This research studied the synthesis of porous silica nanoparticles
using polystyrene (PS) as a template via emulsion polymerization. SEM micrographs showed spherical
nanoparticles with diameter in the range of 200 – 300 nm. Calcination of the nanoparticles at high
temperature was used to remove PS template which was confirmed by TEM image of the particles
after the process. The TEM image showed pores inside the particles as layer-by-layer and hexagonal
pores. The removal of the template was also confirmed by FT-IR in which PS peaks disappeared. TGA
suggested that PS depolymerized and degraded at the temperature above 200
o
C. This research can be
used as a model to synthesize mesoporous nanoparticles with controlled size and pore size of the
particles.
