Abstract
The study on the pattern of the golden apple snail (GAS) management in the paddy field of
Amphoe Pa Phayom, Phattalung Province was aimed to observe on the distribution of GAS and the
pattern of GAS management by the farmers in Amphoe Pa Phayom, Phattalung Province. One hundred
–thirty six questionnaires were used to interview the farmers including 125 farmers in Tambon Pa
Phayom 9 farmers in Tambon Ban Phrao and 2 farmers in Tambon Lan Koi. The results of the study
show that most of the rice plantations are direct-seedling 2 times a year. The invasion of GAS occurred in
Tambon Pa Phayom and caused some crop damages all the year, the invasion of GAS started during the
flooding time in the paddy field i.e. from the seedling to the early reproductive stage. The GAS found in
these area were both eggs and adults. Most of the GAS management by the farmers (58.6 %) is manually
elimination i.e. collected in plastic bag or sac and manully crashed them buried under ground or left them
died under sunlight and put in the fields. The absent of GAS management activity was found in 30% of
the farmers. However, some of farmers used the GAS for household consumtions or used as paultry feed.
The extensions for GAS utilization programs are need in this area, especially the application of GAS as
protein sources for animal feed or preparation of biofertilizer from GAS for other agricultural activities.
