Abstract
A total of 57 samples of Asian seabass (
Lates calcarife
Bloch.) in a fish hatchery along the west
coast of Thailand was used to study genetic diversity. For seven microsatellite loci, the allele sizes
ranged from 167 to 460 basepairs and total allele numbers were 28. The average allele number was
4 alleles per locus. The observed heterozygous (H
0
) and expected heterozygosity (H
e
) equaled 0.39
and 0.65 respectively. Our investigation revealed that this Asian seabass population had low genetic
diversity. For suggestion, genetic diversity of the Asian seabass population should be increased by
selecting Asian seabass that had different genetic background to be used in breeding programe.
