Abstract
Downy Rose Myrtle, a local plant in southern of Thailand, has been used in diarrhea treatment
as local wisdom. In this work, bacterial inhibition activity of methanol and ethanol 50 % extracts from
leaves, fruits, stems, and root of Downy Rose Myrtle ( Rhodomyrtus tomentosa (Aition) Hassk) have been
investigated against five food-borne pathogenic bacteria: Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella
sp., Staphylococcus aureus and Vibrio cholerae by Agar dilution and Disc diffusion methods. The results
showed that crude methanol and ethanol 50% leaves extracts showed better inhibitory effect against
B. cereus and S. aureus(MIC 0.256 mg/ml ) than V. cholerae , Salmonella sp. and E. coli respectively
(MICmethanol =2.048 , 4.096 and 16.384 mg / ml : MICethanol 50% =1.024 , 1.024 และ 2.048 mg / ml ).
Both crude methanol and ethanol 50% fruits extracts also showed good inhibitory effect against S. aureus ,
B. cereus, V. cholerae , Salmonella sp. and E.coli, respectively (MIC 0.256, 0.512, 2.048, 2.048 and
0.4096 mg / ml). Extracts from stems and roots showed low inhibitory effect against these bacteria
(MIC= 8.192-16.384 mg/ ml). Phytochemical screening of the crude extracts revealed the existence of
phenolic compounds, tannin and flavonoids but no alkaloids. Some spots of terpenes and steroids were
detected in hexane fraction from leaves and fruit extracts by TLC analysis. Hexane, ethyl acetate and
aqueous fractions from fruits and leaves extracts have also been investigated. Hexane and ethyl acetate
extracts showed similar antibacterial activity to crude extracts. The results of this study support the local
wisdom of using the Downy Rose Myrtle leaf and fruit as medicine at home for treatment
diarrhea that caused by bacteria.
