Abstract
The objectives of the study of “ The Social and cultural Development of the
Communities in Papayom District, Pattalung ” were aimed at studying primary data of
the communities in Papayom district which the attention was directed to the studied
issue of the social and cultural development of the communities in Papayom district
since they were set up in the year 1800 until in the year 2004. As well, the change of
the communities after Thaksin University was set up as a new campus in those areas
was taken into consideration and studied
The result of this study was revealed that the communities in Papayom
district have a long history related to a central authority since Ayutthaya period.
Within the communities, there were simple administrative system arrangement, social
structure, and economic system according to the communities’ conditions conducive to
closed village. This deeply enhanced the system of patronizing relation and family
relation. Later, after having Asia Road made through the areas and Papayom was set
up to be a district, some changes occurred in the communities, especially material
growth which more affected people’s ways of life. When Thaksin University expanded
a new campus to Papayom, the Papayom communities have again been changed. The
changes occurred in some areas of some communities. They did not, however, change
rapidly in the communities’ structure for the ways of life of most people in the
communities have still bound with the traditionally social system as they have
followed since the past.
