Study design
This study is a randomized, controlled, parallel trial consists of 4-wk run-in period and 24-wk
dietary intervention trial which had 4 follow-up visits (at wk0, wk8, wk16, wk24). Seventy-eight subjects
were recruited and divided into two groups (matched with age, sex and HbA1c) as Sangyod brown rice
group (SYBR = 39) and white rice group as control (WR = 39). From run-in period throughout the study,
all subjects were instructed on weight-maintaining diabetes exchange diet. They were asked to not
change their physical activity pattern. After run-in period,
subjects in SYBR group consumed Sangyod
brown rice provided by researchers at least two meals per day while subjects in control group
consumed white rice as previously eaten throughout 24 weeks.
Sangyod Phattalong brown rice
Sangyod Phattalong rice was purchased from Phattalong province. Proximate analysis and also
preparation as vacuum bags were done by Pathumthani Rice Research Center. The nutrition
information of Sangyod Phatthalong brown rice was shown in Table 1.

Measurements
On the day before blood collection day, all subjects were asked to avoid drinking tea, coffee,
soft drinks and large quantities of colorful fruits and vegetables. After 10 -12 hours of overnight fast,
they came to research unit between 7.00 – 9.00 am. Every visit, fasting blood samples was collected
for determining plasma glucose, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and serum insulin. Fasting plasma
glucose and HbA1c was measured by using Cobas c 311/501 analyzer
(
Roche/Hitachi). Serum insulin
were measured by a solid-phase, enzyme-labeled, chemiluminescent immunometric assay using
IMMULITE/IMMULITE 1000 Insulin, Siemens company. Anthropometric parameters: height, body weight,
