Abstract
The possibility of using oil palm shoot juices (OPSJ) as nutrient and carbon source for the
bacterial cellulose (BC) production by
Acetobacterxylinum
TISTR
was investigated. Results showed
that bacteria able to produce BC from a mixture of OPSJ and coconut juice in the ration of 50:50.
Mixing of nutrient supplemented (MgSO
4
·

O, (NH

,ethanol and sucrose)with OPSJ/coconut juice
conferred the increasing of BC yield from 4.70 to 5.00 g/L. The properties of produced BC such asthe
functional group, morphology, lattice structure, thermal properties and weigh losswere characterized
byfourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction
(XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetic analysis (TGA).
