Abstract
Trial I, 8 test diets supplemented with
Spirulina
sp.,
Haematococcus pluvialis
,
Chlorella
sp.,
Scenedesmus
sp.,
Phaffia rhodozyma
, synthetic
β
-carotene, astaxanthin and control diet were prepared for
goldfish (
Carrasius auratus
) and ornamental cichlid (
Melanochromis auratus
). After 6 weeks of feeding trial, ,
growth performances and survivals were not significantly differences among treatments (P>0.05) in both
ornamental fish species. Gold fish fed test diets supplemented with
Spirulina
sp. and astaxanthin shown high body
colour, especcially red (a value) and yellow (b value). Moreover,
Spirulina
sp. and astaxanthin also increases in
total carotenoids contents when compared to other treatments (P<0.05). The cichlid fed all carotenoids
supplemented diets shown higher yellow value (b value) and total carotenoids contents than control group
(P<0.05). It was clearly demonstrated that the diet supplemented with
Spirulina
sp. shown high efficiency for
pigmentation in both ornamental fish. Trial II was under taken to determined the effect of
Spirulina
sp. levels on
growth, body colour and total carotenoids content in both goldfish and cichlid. The test diets supplemented with
Spirulina
sp. at the concentration of total carotenoids 0, 25, 50, 100, 200 and 300 ppm were fed to both ornamental
fish for 6 weeks. Either goldfish and cichlid fed all test diets were not significantly difference in growth
performances, blood parameters and disease resistance (P>0.05). However, goldfish fed diet contained > 25 ppm
total carotenoids from Spirulina sp. shown high a value, b value and total carotenoids contents. Whereas, > 100
ppm of total carotenoids from
Spirulina
sp. increased yellow colour (b value) and total carotenoids contents in
ornamental cichlid. In conclusion, supplementation of
Spirulina
sp. increased body color by means of redness,
yellowness and total carotenoids content of the goldfish at a concentration of 25 ppm and shown its efficiency for
pigmentation enhancement in ornamental cichlid when supplemented in the test diet at a concentration of 100
ppm. But such concentrations were not effects on growth and survival of both ornamental fish.
