Abstract
The objectives of this research were (1) to study the levels of the opinions of administrators
and teachers at the private schools with Islamic instruction in Pattani Province on the teachers’
competencies by the standard professional criteria for teachers, 2) to compare the teachers’ opinions
by the variables of gender, teaching experience, types of teaching, and school size, 3) to compare
the opinions of the administrators and the teachers on the said teachers’ competencies, 4) to
compile problems, obstacles, and suggestions about the teachers’ performance that hampered
the development of the said competencies with reference to the schools as indicated above.
The research population, by means of multi-stage random sampling, consisted of 299
administrators and teachers of religious and academic subjects at the private schools with Islamic
instruction in Pattani Province. The data-gathering instrument was a questionnaire. The research
found that : (1) The opinions of the administrators and the teachers at the private schools with
Islamic instruction on the teachers’ competencies were at a moderate level. (2) The teachers’ opinions
on the teachers’ competencies as whole and by individual aspects differed by gender, school size
type teaching. But by teaching experience, the teachers’ opinions on the said competencies did
not differed. (3) The opinions of the administrators and the teachers of the said schools on the
competencies in accordance with the teacher professional standards (4) The problems, obstacles,
and suggestions regarding the improvement, remedying, and developing the teachers’ competencies
by the standard criteria for the teaching profession for teachers in Pattani Province were identified
teachers had a problem of language usage and were unskilled in the use of the language in the course
of instruction. They lacked the knowledge of the processes of learning organization and of curriculum
development. In classroom management, psychology. classroom research, self-development, and had
little cooperation with the community. Therefore, these measures should be put into effect: training
programs to develop teachers, an adequate budget for all quarters, encouragement of teachers
toward professional self-development, and continuous supervision of teachers’ work performance.
