Abstract
This research examines a community-based tourism initiative currently developing in Kanan village,
Phuket, Thailand. The research attention is given to the experiences of the tourists and the lessons learnt by the
community in terms of opportunities and challenges in implementing community based tourism in Kanan. The
study employed participatory action research using both quantitative and qualitative methods. A survey of
visitors was conducted. Four focus group interviews with direct stakeholders in the area were implemented
and fieldwork and meetings with the community were implemented. Personal observations and document
analysis were also used to supplement the data analysis. The findings indicate that Kanan has great potential as
a socio-cultural and agricultural destination. Kanan provides many culture based activities such as local-
culture study, local cuisine, Nora-bic exercise, Talang historical and archeological study and local agricultural
product-visitation. The relationship among locals was also strong—especially their commitment to conserve
their local culture. With respect to challenges, Kanan village is inexperienced and lacks qualified personnel to
systematically oversee and manage community based tourism in the area. The results also reveal that tourism
facilities are insufficient. The study recommends that greater local participation, concrete support from the
public sector, skills enhancement and better tourism promotion activities be implemented.
