Abstract
Background
: This retrospective case-control study was aimed to find out the risk factors of accidents and injuries
from construction work.
Material and Methods
. Construction workers in Thaksin University, Patthalung campus were randomized into study
group of 80 cases and control group of 196 cases. Questionnaire developed by Thirapong and his group was applied. It
was examined to test for internal reliability by alpha coefficient of Cronbach which yielded 0.73. Descriptive analysis
was used for demographic data and logistic regression analysis was used to determine the influence of risk factors on
development of accident and injury from work.
Results
: There were four times more of male workers than female workers. Most of them age between 17-54 years
old, married finished only primary school level, lived in southern Thailand, and earn their salary on daily basis. For the
health factors, those who drank power-enhancing beverages had 8.2 times higher risk of accidents and injuries. Those
who drink alcohol beverage had 1.9 times more risk and the risk reached 18.4 times if they took alcohol beverage
during work time. Workers without underlying disease had lower risk. There was high level of knowledge about safety
working without significant difference between the two groups. There was more positive attitude towards preventive
behaviors among the study group with statistical significance (p<.01)
There were more cases in the study group with some personality impairments eg. Moody, aggression, loss of
concentration, anxious and worrisome. Far factors associated with accidents and injuries, it was found that weight
lifting works had 1.65 time more risk. Working duration less than 5 years had 2.89 time more accidents and injuries
(p<.01). Also, working on the construction shelf increase the risk to 2.89 more (p<.01). No significant difference was
found in satisfaction in work among the both groups.
Conclusion
: Behavior modification, avoidance of alcohol and power-enhancing beverages and promotion of
emotion skills were significant for working promotion. Education on safety working in climbing up the construction
shelf and heavy object lifting should be encourage. Promotion of good health and good quality of life focusing on
healthy and safety measure was necessary for improving the worker’s quality of life.
