Abstract
This research studied the architectural features and beliefs as found in the ancient mosques of
Pattani and Narathiwat Provinces. The researcher collected fieldwork data by means of interview, observation,
photographing. And line-sketch illustration, and reported the findings through descriptive analysis. The
findings of the study may be summarized as follows.
The architectural features covered four ancient mosques of the said provinces: Grueseh Mosque,
Dato Mosque (or Darulna-im Mosque), Wadilhusen Mosque (or Talohmanaw Mosque), and Old Darulyadidi
Mosque. Two of the mosques, Grueseh and Dato in Pattani Province. Were cemented-brick buildings, and the
other two, Wadilhusen and Darulyadidi in Narathiwat Province, were wooden structures. All the ancient mosques
were quadrilateral, almost square, in design. The design of Grueseh Mosque was balanced, beautiful, and
ornate in the style of Gothic art, with its cemented-brick base similar in shape to a petal-up lotus, and
with brick-lined steps. The main body of the mosque consisted of round and solid brick columns,
cemented-brick walls through which doors and windows were bored in the shapes of pointed arch and
curved arch. The roof of the mosque was still unfinished. Dato Mosque (or Daruln-im Mosque) was balanced
in design and was beautiful in the style of Gothic art like Grueseh Mosque. Its base was made of
cemented brick similar in shape to petal-up and petal-down lotuses. Its main body consisted of round and
solid brick columns. Its cemented-brick walls were bored through for curved-arch-shaped doors and
windows with double panes. Its roof was made of concrete with lotus-shaped dome at the top.
Wadilhusen Mosque (Talohmanaw Mosque). Its architectural feature was exotic and outstanding, a
combination of Chinese, Thai, and Malay arts. Its base consisted of posts with high pedestals. Its floor
was made of wooden boards laid close to each other. The main house was supported by square-shaped
posts of Takian wood. Its walls were made of Wooden boards, with doors and windows also made of
wood. The stairs inside the building were made of Takian wood. Its roof was hipped as well as gabled in
design. Old Darulyadidi Mosque was similar in design to a place of dwelling. Its lower part was
supported by posts with pedestals low and high. Its stairs were made of concrete and lined with wocden
boards laid close to each other. The main structure was supported by square posts made of Takian wood.
Its walls were made of wooden boards arranged in overlapping slats vertically and horizontally, and there
were doors and windows with double openings through the slats. The roof was gabled, hipped, and low-
eave in design. As for beliefs, those found in connection with the mosques were in conformity with religious
beliefs. But some local beliefs were also found. The beliefs can be classified into three categories: beliefs
about areas and directions, beliefs about components, and other beliefs.
